Thanks Merc (Nice Mii),

Your comment reflected something that I'd considered for a future post: namely, that creating content is only the first step in generating interest. For many bloggers and businesses, it's also the last.

Content is the fuel and the spark that ingnites online interactions. Social media advocates tend to get distracted by the flames, (i.e. the subsequent conversation) Conversing is indeed a powerful marketing tool. It builds relationships, creates influence, builds trust.

But in this virtual universe, we're all represented by the content we create. Contributing more noise to the conversation is no more valuable than speaking to yourself.

I think the hope is that if what you are writing is quality, then people will find you. Of course, you still need to market yourself and connect with other people, but if you are writing good content, that's all that matters!

The bulk of blogging still seems to me a lot like what twitter has become (what I had for breakfast, look at this funny link, etc.), so if you can stand out with articles like this one, you're in good shape!

Thanks.

Sounds a bit like the "If a tree falls in the forest..." question. I agree we you, though, that blogs are a great place to hone your craft and practice, practice, practice...even if you only have one reader.

Thanks for sharing.

Excellent post. I used to drive my bosses nuts when they would quote stats and then I would de-bunk them. Maybe that's one of the reasons why I don't have a boss....
But that's another topic.
Am I your one reader??
